KUVEMPU UNIVERSITY:
Named after the far-famed Kannada poet laureate Dr.K.V.Puttapa, this university came into existence in 1987, in fullfilment of the long-felt needs and aspiration of the people of Shivamogga region covering Shivamogga, Chikkamagalur, Chitradurga and Davanagere districts. It actually took off as a post-graduate campus of the University of Mysore in 1973, with just four departments, but soon evolved into an independent university.
Located with the enchanting Bhadra Reservoir (BR) project and the Sahyadri mountain range in the backdrop (28km from Shivamogga and 20km from ), the university campus occupies 264 acres of lush green forest land. The main centre being Jnana Sahyadri, which hosts 24 departments in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce and Management, there is a post-graduate campus at Davanagere. The university features 24 P.G. departments, 124 undergraduate colleges in multiple disciplines, 35,000 students (21,000 male and 14,000 female), 175 teaching staff and 275 non teaching staff.
Having succeeded in brining about a radical change in the educational scenario of Shivamogga, Chikkamagalur, Chitradurga and Davanagere (consisting of predominantly rural and socially backward people), and in preserving and promoting the culture of these area in the course of 12 years, the university now looks forward to ever grater innings in the future, true to the spirit of intellectual giant it commemorates.
